Tennessee – A statewide tornado drill at 1 p.m. today is prompting residents to practice emergency safety procedures and review preparedness plans.
Emergency management officials across Tennessee announced the coordinated drill will simulate a tornado warning, giving residents, schools, and businesses an opportunity to rehearse how they would respond during severe weather.
According to emergency management agencies, outdoor warning sirens may sound in some communities as part of the exercise. Officials emphasized that the drill is only a test and not an actual emergency.
Residents are encouraged to use the drill to identify their safest shelter location, typically the lowest level of a building in an interior room away from windows. Officials also recommend reviewing family emergency plans and ensuring all household members understand where to go and how to respond.
The drill is part of ongoing severe weather preparedness efforts as tornado season approaches peak activity across the region. Tennessee frequently experiences severe storms in the spring months, making readiness a priority for local and state agencies.
Officials said practicing during a scheduled drill can help reduce confusion and improve response times during real emergencies.
The exercise may briefly impact school schedules or workplace routines around the 1 p.m. timeframe.
