Memphis, Tennessee – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Mid-South, signaling potentially dangerous travel conditions from Friday through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the watch is in effect from 12 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday and includes West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and East Arkansas, including the Memphis metro area.
Forecast details indicate the potential for significant snow and ice accumulation, with impacts varying by location. Areas north of the Tennessee–Mississippi state line could see snow or sleet accumulations greater than 3 inches, while locations south of the line may experience over 2 inches of snow or sleet. Ice accumulation exceeding 0.25 inches is also possible in parts of the region.
The National Weather Service warns that even small amounts of ice can create extremely hazardous driving conditions, particularly on interstates, bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Major travel corridors including I-40, I-55, I-240, and U.S. 78 could see delays, spinouts, and temporary closures if conditions worsen.
In addition to travel hazards, officials note the potential for power outages due to ice accumulation on trees and power lines, combined with bitter cold temperatures expected during and after the storm.
Residents are urged to prepare now by monitoring forecasts, adjusting travel plans, and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready. The National Weather Service emphasized that confidence in exact snowfall and ice totals will improve closer to the event.
Commuters, weekend travelers, and freight operators should anticipate slow or unsafe travel conditions beginning as early as Friday afternoon.
