Memphis, Tenn. – A round of scattered showers Tuesday will be followed by an unusually sharp cooldown, with near-record low temperatures possible by early Wednesday across the Mid-South.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, rain chances will linger through Tuesday with highs in the lower 80s. Areas like Oxford, Tupelo, and Forrest City could see more consistent showers, while Memphis may see drier breaks by late afternoon. Skies will clear Tuesday night, allowing cooler air to funnel into the region.

By sunrise Wednesday, parts of Shelby County and surrounding areas may wake to temperatures in the upper 50s, nearly 20 degrees below late August norms. The NWS says Memphis carries a 90% chance of dipping below 60 degrees, while Corinth and Jackson also face high probabilities of record-setting lows.

Drivers should be cautious of patchy fog during the morning commute, while residents are encouraged to keep light jackets handy. The cooler pattern won’t last long, as rain returns Thursday with widespread showers and possible thunderstorms.

Advisories may be issued if record lows are officially threatened, and updates are expected midweek as the next system approaches.
