Memphis, TN – Tennessee residents should brace for extreme weather conditions starting today and continuing through the weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for much of the region, with heat index values expected to reach a blistering 114°F. The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, urging residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and stay hydrated.
According to the NWS in Memphis, today’s excessive heat is a precursor to a series of unsettled weather conditions. Starting tonight, isolated severe storms are forecasted to sweep across the area, with the highest risk occurring between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Friday morning. The primary threats include gusty winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail, with a low risk of tornadoes. Residents are advised to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially during nighttime hours when storms are expected.
The heat will persist into Friday, with another day of temperatures nearing 96°F, before slightly cooling down over the weekend. Saturday is expected to be partly cloudy with a high of 93°F, while Sunday may offer some relief with temperatures dropping to the upper 80s. However, the chance for storms remains, particularly late Friday night into early Saturday morning.
