Newport, TN – A Flood Warning has been issued for the Pigeon River at Newport, Tennessee, as minor flooding is expected in the area overnight and into Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, the river stage reached 9.3 feet at 11:00 PM EDT on Monday, and it is expected to crest at 9.5 feet just after midnight. This is above the flood stage of 8.0 feet. Minor flooding is forecast downstream of the gage, affecting areas along Highway 25/70 and potentially impacting Jimtown Road. The community of Edwina may also experience flooding.
The warning is in effect from Monday night to Tuesday morning. Officials are urging residents to be cautious around flooded roads, especially at night when it’s harder to see potential dangers. Motorists should turn around if they encounter flooded areas.
