Memphis, TN – The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning 6 p.m. Monday through 6 a.m. Tuesday for portions of Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi, as a wintry mix is expected to create slick and hazardous road conditions across the Mid-South.
Forecasters warn that a light glaze of ice could develop on roads, bridges, and sidewalks, particularly along and north of Interstate 40, as freezing rain and sleet move in Monday evening. Areas west of the Mississippi River, including Jonesboro, West Memphis, Blytheville, and eastern Arkansas, have the highest potential for ice accumulations near 0.01 to 0.05 inches.
Even small amounts of ice can make bridges and overpasses treacherous, especially during the Tuesday morning commute when temperatures will remain near freezing. Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and allow for extra travel time.
According to the NWS, driving impacts are the primary concern, with icing likely to cause isolated travel delays rather than widespread damage. However, untreated secondary roads could quickly become slick overnight.
By late Tuesday morning, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing, helping to melt any remaining ice. The Mid-South will remain chilly, though, with another cold front expected later in the week.
Residents should continue monitoring NWS Memphis for updates as conditions evolve overnight.
