Chattanooga, TN – A winter storm continues to impact portions of eastern Tennessee and southwestern North Carolina, bringing mixed precipitation and dangerous road conditions. Snowfall of up to one inch and light ice accumulations are expected through early Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST. Communities across Sequatchie, Marion, Hamilton, and Polk Counties are experiencing freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Areas near Chattanooga and Cleveland face hazardous travel as slick roads and icy bridges develop overnight.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. The NWS advises drivers who must travel to exercise extreme caution and pack emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water. Bridges and overpasses are particularly vulnerable to freezing, increasing the risk of accidents.
The storm is expected to taper off early Saturday, but lingering icy patches may persist into the morning hours. Authorities recommend monitoring local road conditions by dialing 511 for real-time updates.
Meteorologists warn that power outages could also occur in areas with heavy ice accumulation. Residents should prepare by securing essential supplies and monitoring weather alerts.
Temperatures will remain near freezing overnight, contributing to treacherous conditions. If traveling, allow extra time, drive slowly, and maintain safe distances from other vehicles.
This weather system is part of a larger pattern affecting the southeastern U.S., with additional impacts possible in surrounding states. The NWS continues to track the storm’s progression and will issue updates as needed.
