Tallahassee, Florida – Widespread rainfall of 2 to 2.5 inches is expected across the Florida Panhandle, southwest Georgia, and southeast Alabama this weekend, with the heaviest rain falling Sunday along major corridors including US-27 and I-10.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, rain chances will increase late Friday before becoming widespread Saturday and Sunday. Forecast models show the highest precipitation totals Sunday, with Tallahassee projected near 2.2 inches, Panama City near 2.3 inches, Dothan up to 2.5 inches, and Albany around 2 inches.

Communities along Interstate 10, US-98, US-84, US-82, and Interstate 75 should prepare for periods of steady rain and locally heavy downpours. Ponding on roadways and reduced visibility may impact weekend travel, particularly Sunday afternoon and evening.

Rain probabilities reach 80 to 90 percent in many areas by Sunday. While thunderstorms are possible, the primary concern at this time is heavy rainfall.

The rainfall is welcome news for the region, which remains in severe to extreme drought conditions according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor. Much of the Tallahassee forecast area is classified in D2 (Severe Drought) to D3 (Extreme Drought). While this system will not completely erase long-term deficits, it could provide meaningful short-term relief.

Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and allow extra stopping distance during heavier rain bands.
