Syracuse, NY – Lake-effect snow continues to spread across Central New York today, prompting an extended Winter Weather Advisory for several counties through Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the advisory now extends until 10 a.m. Tuesday for Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, Southern Cayuga and Tompkins counties, including Syracuse, Ithaca, Oneida, Cortland and Auburn. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected, with the highest totals likely across higher terrain and areas prone to persistent snow bands.

Farther north in Northern Oneida County, including Boonville, a separate Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday, where 1 to 3 more inches of snow are forecast.

Forecasters warn that slippery roads, reduced visibility and rapidly changing conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes, as well as Tuesday morning’s travel. Lake-effect snow bands may shift quickly, making conditions highly variable across short distances—from heavy snow to clearer skies within just a few miles.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time and use caution, especially on rural roads, hills, bridges and overpasses. The combination of fresh accumulation and cold temperatures may lead to icy patches during the early morning and evening hours.

The NWS emphasizes that weather and travel conditions may change quickly throughout the advisory period. Motorists can check updated statewide road conditions by calling 511.

Snow is expected to diminish late Tuesday morning as lake-effect bands weaken and move south.
