HOUSTON, TX – A strong cold front will move through Southeast Texas today, triggering scattered thunderstorms, a few of which could become strong or severe, according to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston.

The main threats include damaging wind gusts and isolated strong storms as the front pushes across the Brazos Valley and toward the Houston area later this afternoon and evening.

Behind the front, strong northwest winds will develop, with sustained speeds of 15–25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph, particularly near the coast.

  • A Gale Warning is in effect for Galveston Bay, Matagorda Bay, and the Gulf waters, where seas could reach 8–11 feet and hazardous wave conditions are expected.
  • A Fire Weather Watch covers portions of Colorado, Wharton, Jackson, and Matagorda Counties, where low humidity (as low as 20%) and dry fuels will increase the risk of fire spread Wednesday.

Forecasters emphasize that the strongest winds are expected between 6 PM Tuesday and 6 PM Wednesday, urging residents to secure loose outdoor items and decorations ahead of the front’s arrival.

Conditions should improve late Wednesday into Thursday as cooler, drier air settles over the region.
