Streator, IL – Firefighters quickly contained a kitchen fire at Omar’s Tavern Friday evening, limiting the blaze to one room despite heavy fire, smoke and water damage inside the downtown Streator business.
According to the Streator Fire Department, crews were dispatched at 7:46 p.m. Friday to a reported kitchen fire at Omar’s Tavern, 1115 Johnson St. The initial response included Engine 3, Medic 9 and Medic 8.
About two minutes after the initial dispatch, the incident was upgraded to a General Alarm, recalling off-duty Streator firefighters to staff additional equipment.
Engine 3 arrived at approximately 7:50 p.m., and firefighters found an active fire in the kitchen. A working fire was declared shortly afterward, and the first-arriving engine company immediately began an offensive attack.
Officials said firefighters had the blaze contained to the room where it started and declared the fire under control at approximately 7:54 p.m. — about four minutes after the first engine arrived.
Crews remained at the tavern to check for possible fire extension and protect the rest of the building. The department declared a loss stop at approximately 8:04 p.m.
The kitchen sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage, while the remainder of the building had light smoke damage, according to the department. No injuries were reported in the release.
Ten Streator firefighters and two EMS personnel responded. Streator police, VCOM Dispatch, ComEd, Nicor Gas and Illinois American Water also assisted during the incident.
The cause remains under investigation by the Streator Fire Department. Officials said the fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
