Pennsylvania — Rain taps rooftops and damp pavement lingers across central counties this morning, but a sharper concern is building fast as temperatures prepare to plunge toward freezing, setting up slick roads and plant damage within hours.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Freeze Warning takes effect at midnight and continues until 9 a.m. Monday, with temperatures dropping to around 30°F. A Freeze Watch remains in place for late Monday night into Tuesday morning, when readings could fall as low as 23°F in colder valleys.

Across State College, Altoona, and Williamsport, scattered showers will taper through the morning, leaving wet pavement in place. As skies begin to clear later today, temperatures will fall quickly after sunset. That combination raises the risk of “flash freezing,” especially on bridges and elevated stretches of I-99 and Route 322. Plan extra time if traveling late.

By early Monday, widespread frost settles in across Centre, Blair, and Cambria counties. Sensitive plants, early crops, and outdoor plumbing face damage if left unprotected. Bring plants indoors and cover garden beds before temperatures drop.

Conditions improve by Monday afternoon with sunshine and highs near 45°F. A noticeable warm-up follows Tuesday, reaching 57°F, then 67°F by Wednesday. Meteorologists are now tracking a return of moisture midweek, with a 40% chance of showers Tuesday night and additional rain chances Wednesday. While severe weather is not expected, shifting temperatures can create brief instability.

Take action now: protect plants, watch for slick roads tonight, and stay alert for updated advisories.

Cold conditions ease after Tuesday morning, though additional alerts remain possible.
