St. Tammany Parish, LA – A fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 24-year-old bicyclist is under active investigation, with Louisiana State Police urging the public to help identify the driver involved.

According to Louisiana State Police, the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, along LA Highway 40 near Blackwell Cemetery Road in the Folsom area. Investigators said Rodrigo Ornelas Jr., of Folsom, was riding his bicycle eastbound in a poorly lit area when he was struck by an unknown vehicle traveling in the same direction.

Authorities believe the vehicle involved is a 2017–2020 Buick Encore with damage to the front right bumper and hood. The driver allegedly fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Ornelas, who was wearing a helmet but dressed in darker clothing, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Troopers noted the bicycle was equipped with reflectors but did not have lights at the time of the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to identify both the driver and vehicle. Anyone with information is urged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop L at (985) 893-6250. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the LSP online reporting system or by calling the Fusion Center Hotline at 1-800-434-8007.

Troopers also reminded motorists and cyclists to remain vigilant, especially in low-light conditions, and to follow all traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.
