St. Louis, Missouri – Residents across eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois should prepare for a soggy start to the weekend as widespread showers and thunderstorms move into the region Friday. While heavy rain is expected to be the main concern, a few storms could become strong during the afternoon and evening if enough instability develops.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, rain chances climb to 90% Friday and Friday night, with showers and thunderstorms expected across much of the region. Forecasters note that if the atmosphere recovers after morning rainfall, there is a low chance for severe thunderstorms, primarily between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. along and west of the Mississippi River, including the St. Louis metro area.
Should stronger storms develop, the primary hazards would include damaging wind gusts, brief tornadoes and heavy rainfall capable of causing localized flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Drivers should be prepared for reduced visibility and water-covered roads during heavier downpours.
Rain chances begin to decrease Saturday, although 30% to 60% coverage of showers and thunderstorms remains possible as cooler air filters into the region. High temperatures will fall into the mid to upper 70s, noticeably cooler than recent days. By Sunday, rain chances drop to around 20%, mainly across southern Illinois, with highs recovering into the lower to middle 80s.
Communities including St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson City, Columbia, Farmington, Belleville and surrounding areas should monitor forecasts closely Friday, especially if outdoor events are planned.
Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, avoid flooded roadways and remain weather aware through Friday evening. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued if thunderstorms become stronger than currently expected.
