Springfield, Missouri – Breezy to strong winds are expected to return to the Springfield area on Friday, with gusts strong enough to impact travel and outdoor conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Springfield.
Forecasters say northwest winds will increase Friday, with maximum wind gusts ranging from 30 to 40 miles per hour, especially during the afternoon hours. Sustained winds will remain breezy throughout the day as colder air continues to move through the region.
The strongest gusts are expected during the late morning and afternoon, when pressure differences behind a departing weather system peak. These winds may make travel more difficult for high-profile vehicles, including trucks, buses, and vehicles towing trailers, particularly on east–west oriented roadways.
The National Weather Service also warns that loose objects such as trash cans, holiday decorations, and lightweight outdoor furniture may be blown around. In addition, small limbs could break and fall, especially where trees are weakened by recent cold or moisture.
While no formal wind advisory has been issued at this time, wind speeds in the 30 to 40 mph range are sufficient to cause localized disruptions, including brief power flickers or debris on roadways.
Winds are expected to gradually diminish Friday evening as the pressure gradient relaxes.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, use caution when driving, and remain alert for sudden gusts, particularly on open roads and elevated surfaces.
Commuters, delivery drivers, and outdoor workers in the Springfield area should plan for wind-related travel challenges Friday afternoon.
