SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Thick fog and near-freezing temperatures are creating hazardous travel across central Illinois early Sunday, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory from the National Weather Service in Lincoln through 9 a.m. Visibility has dropped below a quarter mile in several locations along Interstates 55, 72, and 74, including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, and Jacksonville.

According to forecasters, calm winds and clear skies overnight allowed temperatures to fall below 32°F, producing areas of freezing fog. This has led to slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and rural roads, especially in low-lying areas and river valleys.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance until fog lifts midmorning. The fog is expected to gradually dissipate after sunrise as temperatures rise into the upper 40s and lower 50s.

The NWS advises morning travelers and early churchgoers to allow extra time and stay alert for changing visibility. Dry, cool weather is expected for the rest of the day, with a steady warming trend early in the week.
