Springfield, IL – Drivers across central Illinois should prepare for snow spreading in after sunset Sunday, with up to 1 inch possible before daybreak Monday and slick stretches likely along I-55 and I-72 during the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, snow will develop late Sunday evening and continue into early Monday morning across much of central and southeast Illinois. There is a 40 to 50 percent chance that parts of the region pick up at least 1 inch of accumulation, though totals may vary depending on the storm’s track. Areas south of I-70 could see a mix with rain at times, limiting snowfall amounts there.

The most impactful window for travel appears to be between 9 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday. Snow-covered lanes may develop along I-55 from Springfield to Bloomington, as well as along I-57 near Champaign and I-74 toward Decatur. Elevated roadways and untreated rural highways in Sangamon, Macon and Logan counties could turn slick quickly as temperatures hover near freezing.

If rain mixes in south of I-70, brief slushy conditions could still create hazardous travel near Effingham and Vandalia. Visibility may also drop under heavier bursts of snow overnight.

Motorists should consider adjusting travel plans Sunday night, reduce speeds and allow extra following distance. Keep headlights on and carry an emergency kit if traveling long distances.

Snow is expected to taper after sunrise Monday, but lingering slick spots may affect the early commute. Additional advisories could be issued as confidence in the storm track increases.
