Lincoln, Illinois – More than 2 inches of rain has fallen across a large portion of central Illinois since Tuesday morning, with some areas reporting significantly higher totals.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln reported that rainfall amounts exceeded 2 inches from near Springfield eastward to the Indiana border. The highest observed total so far was 3.51 inches near Lovington.
Radar estimates show widespread rainfall across communities including Decatur, Champaign, Bloomington and surrounding areas. Heavier bands of precipitation developed south and east of Springfield, contributing to the higher totals.
The rainfall was measured through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
While the rain brings needed moisture to parts of the region, officials advise motorists to remain alert for ponding on roadways, especially in low-lying or poor-drainage areas.
For commuters and students traveling midweek, wet pavement and reduced visibility may impact morning and evening drive times.
Additional updates will be issued if further rainfall or flooding concerns develop.
