Springfield, IL – A dramatic weather shift is unfolding across Central Illinois, with freezing temperatures early Saturday giving way to unseasonably warm conditions by Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a freeze warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday for areas east of Interstate 57, with widespread frost possible elsewhere across central Illinois. Early morning lows are expected to dip into the lower 30s, posing a risk to tender vegetation. Residents are urged to bring sensitive plants indoors or provide protective coverings.

Despite the chilly start, temperatures will rise sharply over the weekend. Highs are forecast to reach between 59–64°F Saturday and soar to 67–77°F by Sunday afternoon. Breezy conditions will dominate the region from Sunday through Tuesday, with winds gusting up to 25 mph.

Mainly dry weather is expected through the early week, though isolated showers may develop Monday morning. A stronger chance for rainfall returns by Wednesday.

With temperature swings exceeding 40 degrees in just 48 hours, residents are advised to stay weather-aware and take precautions for both frost protection and elevated fire risks due to wind and dry air.
