Springfield, IL – A powerful storm system is sweeping across Illinois today, bringing severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and overnight snowfall to parts of the state. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) warning for severe weather, with all hazards possible, including large hail, damaging winds, and isolated EF2+ tornadoes.
According to the NWS, scattered severe thunderstorms are expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., primarily impacting central Illinois, including cities such as Peoria, Bloomington, and Champaign. Strong non-thunderstorm winds are forecasted to reach up to 55 mph throughout the day and night, potentially causing travel disruptions and property damage. Officials are advising residents to secure loose outdoor items and remain cautious while driving.
By late evening, the storm system will transition to winter weather for areas north of I-72, including Galesburg and Lacon. Snowfall amounts could reach up to 2 inches, with a 10% chance of totals as high as 3 inches in some locations. Lighter snow accumulations may extend as far south as I-70, though primarily as a dusting.
Residents are urged to monitor local weather alerts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Those in the storm’s path should have emergency plans in place and stay updated on further advisories from the NWS.
