Spokane, Washington – Dry conditions and gusty winds are set to return to eastern Washington on Wednesday, raising the risk for fire spread and creating hazards for boaters in the Columbia Basin and Palouse regions.

According to the National Weather Service Spokane office, breezy west winds with gusts reaching 25 mph are expected to develop Wednesday, August 20, across the Columbia Basin, Spokane area, Palouse, and Wenatchee. The winds will accompany warm, dry air — a combination that can rapidly elevate fire conditions.

Choppy waters on inland lakes and rivers, particularly near the Columbia River and Lake Roosevelt, could pose danger for small craft. The gusts may also contribute to fast-moving fire starts, especially in areas with dry grass and agricultural debris.

Residents in Spokane, Pullman, Moses Lake, and Wenatchee should secure loose outdoor items and avoid outdoor burning. Boaters are urged to check conditions before launching and consider delaying trips if winds increase early.

While no formal advisories are yet in effect, NWS officials warn that conditions could worsen quickly. More updates are expected Wednesday morning.
