Kalamazoo, MI – Drivers in southern Michigan could face snow-covered roads and low visibility Saturday afternoon as a developing winter system collides with peak Thanksgiving weekend travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, snow is expected to reach far southern Lower Michigan by midday Saturday, continuing into the evening. Areas from Kalamazoo to Coldwater and extending east toward Hillsdale face a 40-50% chance of seeing 4 inches or more of snow accumulation.

While snowfall rates and timing remain uncertain, roads could become slick quickly, especially in untreated rural areas and during heavier bursts of snow. Temperatures near 32°F may lead to a rain-snow mix in some locations, which could reduce totals but still result in hazardous travel.

Interstate 94 and U.S. 131 may be especially impacted during the heaviest snow window late Saturday afternoon into the evening hours. Visibility reductions and slushy conditions are possible even where rain mixes in.

More alerts could be issued Friday depending on the final track and temperature profile of the system.
