Blacksburg, VA – A powerful cold front is set to sweep across Southwest Virginia beginning Wednesday night, bringing snow showers, gusty winds, and plunging temperatures. Residents along I-81 and in mountainous areas are urged to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and sub-freezing wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service, the system will move in late Wednesday, with temperatures dropping to the low 30s by night. Snow showers are likely in higher elevations, especially in western Greenbrier County, WV, where light to moderate accumulations are expected through Saturday. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph, creating wind chills in the teens.

By Thursday, daytime highs will struggle to exceed 41°F, with more snow showers possible during the evening hours. Friday will remain cold, with highs near 40°F and a continued chance of snow flurries before skies clear by Saturday. Motorists are advised to exercise caution on icy roads and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.

Looking ahead, temperatures will gradually rebound starting Sunday, with highs returning to the low 50s under partly sunny skies. However, the wintry blast is a sharp reminder for locals to check their emergency kits, prepare for power outages, and winterize their vehicles.
