Blacksburg, VA – Drivers across parts of southwest Virginia could see slick road conditions as two rounds of light snow move through the region through Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the first period of light snow is expected through Tuesday evening, mainly impacting higher elevations in the mountains. A second round is forecast to develop Wednesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday night. Total snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, generally around an inch or less.
Forecasters say even minor accumulations could still create travel issues, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Reduced visibility may also occur at times during heavier snow bursts, particularly in mountain communities.
The highest snowfall totals are expected in the Blue Ridge and surrounding higher elevations, while lower elevations across southwest Virginia and parts of southern West Virginia may see little to no accumulation. Still, officials caution that temperatures near freezing could allow snow to stick briefly during heavier periods.
The National Weather Service classifies the overall impact as low, but urges drivers to use caution during the evening and overnight hours. Travel could be affected Tuesday night and again Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and monitor local forecasts for updates as conditions develop.
