Blacksburg, VA –Drivers across southwest Virginia should brace for bitter cold early Saturday as temperatures plummet into the teens and low 20s, raising the risk of black ice along key corridors like I-81, I-77, and US-460.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, calm winds overnight will do little to ease the deep chill settling across the region. From 7 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Saturday, temperatures will drop to as low as 13°F in Beckley, 14°F in Wytheville, and 16°F in Roanoke—roughly 10 to 15 degrees colder than normal for late November.

Motorists should use extreme caution on elevated surfaces and shaded roads, particularly along stretches of I-81 through Roanoke County, I-77 near Fancy Gap, and mountain passes across the Blue Ridge. Despite calm winds, untreated pavement may freeze overnight, creating hazardous driving conditions before sunrise.

Residents are urged to limit early morning travel, dress in layers, and ensure pets and outdoor pipes are protected from the freeze.

More updates may be issued if the cold lingers or if wintry precipitation is introduced in upcoming forecasts.
