El Paso, TX – Residents across southwest Texas and south-central New Mexico are bracing for snow as a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 5 a.m. MST Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will continue through Thursday, with an additional 1 to 2 inches expected in lower elevations. Areas in the Gila Region, Black Range, and uplands of the New Mexico Bootheel could see totals of up to 5 inches. Gusty winds up to 35 mph will further reduce visibility, complicating travel conditions.

The advisory covers a wide area, including El Paso, Las Cruces, Silver City, and Alamogordo, where temperatures are expected to remain near freezing. Hazardous road conditions may affect Thursday morning and evening commutes. Travelers should anticipate delays and use extreme caution.

Local authorities recommend residents prepare for icy roads and reduced visibility. For those planning to drive, keeping emergency kits, flashlights, and blankets in vehicles is advised. Road conditions can be monitored by calling 511 or visiting state transportation websites.

This marks one of the season’s most significant snowfalls in the region, disrupting daily routines and requiring ongoing cleanup efforts. Schools in affected areas may close or delay openings due to unsafe conditions.

The advisory emphasizes that higher elevations will experience the most severe impacts, with snow potentially accumulating quickly on roads and sidewalks. Residents in these areas should avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on the latest weather alerts.
