Phoenix, AZ – The Southwest is about to be treated to one of the most spectacular celestial events of the year as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower peaks this weekend. From the night of August 11 through the early hours of August 12, skywatchers in the region could witness up to 100 meteors per hour, with the possibility of seeing one meteor per minute under ideal conditions. The Perseids, which come from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, have been active since mid-July, but the peak nights promise the most dazzling show.

Even with a 53% waxing moon, the best viewing will occur after the moon sets, offering darker skies for optimal meteor spotting. For the best experience, Southwest residents should consider heading to dark-sky locations like Arizona’s Grand Canyon, New Mexico’s White Sands National Park, or Nevada’s Great Basin National Park.

Make sure to bring warm clothing, a blanket, or a comfortable chair, along with some snacks and hot drinks to stay cozy throughout the night. Gather your friends and family to share the experience. With clear skies, you could see up to 100 meteors per hour, making this a night you won’t want to miss in the Southwest!
