Pittsburgh, PA – The National Weather Service has confirmed five tornadoes struck Southwest Pennsylvania on the evening of June 26. Tornadoes were reported in Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland, Indiana, and Greene counties.
According to the NWS Pittsburgh, the tornadoes formed as a small, intense squall line rapidly developed along the Washington and Allegheny county line. The storms moved at nearly 50 mph, producing significant wind damage and multiple tornadoes, including two tornadoes simultaneously south of Delmont in Westmoreland County.
An EF1 tornado in North Fayette caused considerable tree damage along a 7-mile path, while an EF2 tornado in Westmoreland County resulted in significant damage to trees and structures over an 11-mile stretch. A brief EF0 tornado near Blairsville, Indiana County, caused minor tree damage. A separate EF0 tornado near Mt. Morris, Greene County, snapped trees and caused minor roof damage. A final EF1 tornado tracked through Wilmerding and Trafford in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties, causing extensive tree damage and minor structural damage.
Further damage assessments are ongoing, particularly in the Wilmerding area, where a potential sixth tornado track is under investigation.
