South Bend, IN – Lake-effect snow is creating hazardous travel conditions across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, with accumulations of up to 6 inches expected in some areas by early Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 AM EST Friday for Elkhart, Northern La Porte, Eastern St. Joseph (IN), Western St. Joseph (IN), Cass (MI), and Berrien counties. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated in Berrien County, Michigan.
Slippery roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, will impact both the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Winds gusting up to 25 mph may cause blowing snow and reduced visibility in some areas.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution, particularly in areas prone to rapid weather changes. The latest road conditions can be obtained by dialing 511.
Lake-effect snow can result in highly localized, intense snowfall, leading to quickly changing road conditions. Residents should remain alert for sudden reductions in visibility and plan for longer travel times through Thursday night.
