Albany, Ga. – Isolated strong to severe storms could sweep across Southwest Georgia this afternoon, bringing threats of damaging wind gusts and hail, especially along the I-75 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) remains in place for areas including Albany, Valdosta, and Thomasville until sunset Wednesday. The main hazards are isolated damaging wind gusts and small to medium-sized hail, with storms expected to gradually weaken after dark.
Residents from Bainbridge to Cordele should be prepared for sudden weather changes. Travel along I-75 may be impacted by reduced visibility and slick roads during downpours. Local emergency managers recommend securing outdoor items and staying indoors during storms.
While the overall severe threat is low, isolated damage to trees, power lines, or vehicles is possible, particularly in open areas or under weak structures. Today’s storms follow a pattern of springtime volatility across southern Georgia, similar to last April’s isolated hail events.
Severe weather risks will diminish after sunset, but officials urge everyone to monitor updates and have multiple ways to receive alerts as more advisories may be issued if conditions change.
