Milwaukee, Wisconsin – A multi-stage winter weather pattern is set to impact southern Wisconsin this week, beginning with accumulating snow tonight and followed by dangerous cold and wind chills heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. tonight through 6 a.m. Wednesday for much of southern Wisconsin. Snow is expected to move west to east overnight, with 2 to 5 inches of accumulation possible along and south of Interstate 94, while lesser amounts fall farther north.
Forecasters note a narrow band of heavier snow may develop between I-94 and the Wisconsin–Illinois border, where locally higher totals near 5 inches are possible. Peak snowfall rates are expected between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday, potentially leading to slick conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.
A second, quick-hitting round of snow is possible Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning, with around an inch or less expected. Blowing and drifting snow may occur at times, especially with wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph, affecting north–south roadways.
Following the snow, temperatures are forecast to drop sharply. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch from Friday morning through late Saturday morning, with wind chill values potentially plunging to -25 to -35 degrees. Subzero wind chills may persist for extended periods, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.
Commuters, students, and outdoor workers are urged to plan ahead for both travel disruptions and extreme cold exposure.
