Blacksburg, VA – Flash flood warnings are in effect today as repeated rounds of heavy rain continue across southern Virginia and parts of northwest North Carolina. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an urgent alert for areas west of the Blue Ridge, including Blacksburg, with potential rain accumulation of 2 to 5 inches.

According to the NWS in Blacksburg, VA, the heavy rainfall is expected to persist throughout the day and into Friday morning, increasing the risk of flash flooding. Local residents are urged to avoid low-lying areas and roads prone to flooding, such as US-460, and to monitor creek and river levels closely as they are expected to rise rapidly.

Mudslides and road closures are also possible in the region, particularly in the foothills. Local authorities are advising against non-essential travel in flood-prone areas until the threat subsides. Rain will taper off by Saturday, offering some relief into the weekend, but caution is advised.
