Atlanta, GA – The Southern U.S. is in for a dazzling night as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower peaks this weekend. From the night of August 11 through the early morning of August 12, residents across the region could see up to 100 meteors per hour, with the potential to see one meteor per minute in the best conditions. The Perseids, originating from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, have been lighting up the skies since mid-July, but the peak nights are when the real show begins.

Despite a 53% waxing moon, the best viewing times will be after the moon sets, leaving the skies dark and optimal for meteor spotting. For the best experience, consider heading to dark-sky locations like Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Texas’s Big Bend National Park, or the beaches of the Florida Panhandle.

Don’t forget to dress warmly, bring a cozy blanket or chair, and perhaps some snacks and warm drinks to enjoy the night. Gathering friends and family will only enhance this celestial experience. With clear skies, you might see up to 100 meteors per hour, making this a must-see event in the Southern skies!
