Boston, MA – Much of southern New England is under a heat advisory through 8 p.m. Monday as sweltering temperatures and stifling humidity push heat index values to nearly 100°F across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, the advisory covers inland portions of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, with the highest heat index values expected Monday afternoon. Cities including Boston, Worcester, Providence, and Hartford could see “feels like” temperatures between 95°F and 100°F.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and use air-conditioned spaces when possible. Vulnerable groups — including children, seniors, and those without access to cooling — face increased risk of heat-related illnesses. Officials recommend checking on neighbors, especially those living alone.
Cooling centers are expected to open in several cities, including Springfield and Lowell. Commuters should prepare for slower transit service and heat-related delays, especially on older infrastructure like the MBTA Red and Orange lines.
The heat comes during the peak of the holiday travel weekend, with beach and parkgoers advised to take frequent shade breaks and wear light clothing.
The heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday. Additional alerts could follow if high temperatures persist into midweek.
