Minneapolis, MN – A mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is set to create hazardous travel conditions across Minnesota on Saturday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory starting tonight at midnight and lasting through 6 p.m. Saturday.
According to the NWS, light precipitation will begin overnight in southern Minnesota, spreading into central areas by sunrise. A combination of sleet, freezing rain, and snow will persist throughout Saturday morning, creating slippery roadways along major routes, including Highway 169. Snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations nearing one-tenth of an inch are expected, particularly in areas south of a line from Redwood Falls to the Twin Cities metro.
Residents are urged to exercise caution while traveling. Reduce speeds and maintain safe distances between vehicles to avoid accidents. Travelers can monitor road conditions through Minnesota’s 511 service at 511mn.org.
Temperatures on Saturday are expected to remain near freezing, complicating the forecasted precipitation transition from sleet to freezing rain. Areas such as Ramsey, Dakota, and Anoka counties will see the most significant impacts. Road crews will be working to mitigate hazardous conditions, but untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges will likely remain slick.
The five-day forecast shows improving conditions by Sunday, with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-30s. However, drivers should remain vigilant through the weekend as lingering icy patches may persist.
