Southern Minnesota – Interstate 35 is closed in southern Minnesota as winter weather creates dangerous road conditions across the region.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, I-35 is closed south of Highway 14, and travel is not advised for much of southern and western Minnesota until at least Monday morning. Officials warned that road conditions remain hazardous as emergency responders continue to handle numerous incidents.
The Iowa State Patrol also reported similar conditions across Iowa, noting that I-35 is closed in southern Minnesota just as it is in Iowa, highlighting the regional scope of the storm’s impact. Authorities urged motorists to “hunker down” and avoid unnecessary travel overnight.
State patrol officials emphasized that roads are slick and dangerous, with reduced traction and increased crash risk. First responders are already responding to a high volume of calls, and officials say staying off the roads helps keep emergency crews available for critical situations.
Drivers are encouraged to check 511mn.org for the latest road closures, traffic conditions, and updates before attempting any travel. Officials stress that conditions may change quickly depending on weather and road treatment.
Residents in affected areas who are able to remain home are urged to do so until conditions improve. Travel is expected to remain hazardous through the night, particularly on interstates and rural highways.
The advisory primarily affects commuters and overnight travelers, with impacts expected to extend into the Monday morning hours if conditions do not improve.
