Jasper, IN – The Indiana State Police Jasper District is warning residents about a phone scam in which fraudsters are allegedly impersonating Publishers Clearing House while making calls that appear to come from the agency’s official phone number.
According to the Indiana State Police Jasper Post, investigators have recently received reports of scammers contacting victims by phone and using caller ID spoofing to display the Jasper District’s telephone number, (812) 482-1441, making the calls appear legitimate.
Authorities said the scammers allegedly use the tactic to gain a victim’s trust and persuade them to send money or provide sensitive personal or financial information.
Indiana State Police emphasized that the agency will never request or authorize payments, gift cards, bank account information, or other financial information over the phone.
Officials advise anyone who receives a suspicious call to avoid sharing personal or financial information, hang up immediately, and independently verify the caller by contacting the organization through a trusted phone number. Residents are also encouraged to report suspected scams to their local law enforcement agency or the Indiana State Police.
Troopers reminded the public that if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. They encourage Hoosiers to verify unexpected prize notifications or payment requests through reputable, trusted sources before sending money or sharing personal information.
The Indiana State Police said awareness and caution remain the best defenses against phone scams that rely on impersonation and caller ID spoofing.
