Pueblo, Colorado – Anyone with outdoor plans across southern Colorado should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions through early this evening as thunderstorms develop over the region with strong wind gusts, lightning and brief heavy rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected through 8 p.m. across south-central and southeastern Colorado, with the greatest coverage near higher terrain. Some storms could generate wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph, periods of moderate to heavy rain and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.
Communities including Pueblo, Canon City, Walsenburg, Trinidad, La Junta, Lamar and surrounding areas could see sudden reductions in visibility during heavier downpours. Drivers on Interstate 25 and portions of U.S. Highways 50 and 160 should watch for slick roads, strong crosswinds and rapidly changing conditions as storms move through.
While the overall severe weather threat remains limited, lightning will pose a significant hazard for hikers, campers, ballfields and other outdoor activities. Residents are encouraged to move indoors immediately if thunder is heard and avoid open areas during storms.
Wind gusts strong enough to blow around unsecured objects are possible with the strongest cells. Those spending time outdoors should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and updates.
Thunderstorm activity is expected to diminish later this evening, but additional alerts may be issued if stronger storms develop across southern Colorado before sunset.
