Chicago, Illinois – Commuters across northern Illinois could face a wet and potentially stormy midweek period as the threat for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall ramps up by Wednesday afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, mild and increasingly humid conditions will settle across the state to begin the workweek before thunderstorms return Tuesday and become more widespread on Wednesday. Forecasters indicate a few strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday, with a greater risk of damaging weather and heavy rainfall developing Wednesday.
The highest impacts are expected across the Chicago metro area, including Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane and Will counties. Travelers along Interstates 90, 94, 55, 80 and 290 could encounter reduced visibility, ponding water and hazardous driving conditions during heavier downpours. Localized flooding may develop in low-lying and poor-drainage areas if storms repeatedly move over the same locations.
Wednesday currently appears to be the most active day of the week, with thunderstorms capable of producing torrential rainfall, gusty winds and frequent lightning. Residents should monitor forecasts closely, especially those with outdoor plans during the afternoon and evening hours.
Conditions improve Thursday as morning showers gradually end, followed by a drier and sunnier pattern heading into Friday. Additional forecast updates and any watches or warnings could be issued as the midweek storm system approaches.
