Salt Lake City, Utah – Wildfire danger remains critically high across much of southern and central Utah through 9 p.m. Sunday, as strong winds and single-digit humidity grip the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Red Flag Warning covers 11 fire zones, including the San Rafael Swell, Grand Staircase, Central Utah Mountains, and the Western Uintah Basin. Southwest winds are expected to gust between 30 and 35 mph before easing Sunday night, while relative humidity dips as low as 6%.
Areas under warning include the Western and Southern Ashley National Forests, the Tavaputs Plateau, Color Country West Desert, and Henry Mountains. These conditions—combined with poor overnight humidity recovery—could cause any ignition to grow quickly out of control.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure chains on trailers, and delay activities like campfires, welding, or mowing dry grass. Officials warn that even a small spark could lead to rapid fire spread under today’s volatile conditions.
Warnings are set to expire by 9 p.m., but with dry air lingering, more fire weather alerts may follow in the coming days.
