Virginia Beach, Va. – Light snow and gusty winds are creating slick travel conditions across Hampton Roads and surrounding counties early Monday, with bridges and overpasses posing the greatest risk through the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for Surry, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Newport News and Hampton. Up to 1 inch of additional snowfall is expected, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph at times.

Even minor accumulations can create hazardous stretches on Interstate 64, Interstate 264 and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, especially where elevated roadways cool more quickly. Both the morning and evening commutes may see slick spots and reduced traction.

Farther inland, Caroline, New Kent and King William counties remain under an advisory until 7 p.m. after a Winter Storm Warning was canceled. Those areas could see 1 to 2 inches of additional snow. Charles City and Hanover counties may also receive up to 1 inch.

VDOT urges motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for the latest road updates. Snow will taper later today, but isolated icy patches may persist into the evening.
