Charlotte, N.C. – Widespread showers and thunderstorms could soak the Southeast through Sunday, with cities like Charlotte, Greenville, and Knoxville expecting over 2 inches of rainfall and the potential for flash flooding.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, the heaviest precipitation is expected to fall between Monday and Saturday, with localized downpours bringing totals over 3 inches in some pockets. Flash flood watches may be issued later this week, especially in urban and low-lying areas where runoff is more likely to overwhelm drainage systems.
In Charlotte, rainfall totals could top 2.3 inches, while Greenville and Knoxville are each projected to receive between 2.2 and 2.4 inches through August 3. Motorists should be cautious on I-85, I-40, and I-26, where ponding and reduced visibility could disrupt morning and evening commutes.
Residents are advised to clear gutters, avoid driving through flooded roads, and have alternate shelter plans ready for outdoor events. Power outages are possible in areas hit by stronger thunderstorms.
This multi-day rain event marks one of the region’s wetter starts to August in recent years. Rain chances continue into early next week, and additional advisories may be issued as systems develop.
