Wilmington, NC – The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for several counties in Southeast North Carolina, including Wilmington, as heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day. With a 40-60% chance of rain, the heaviest downpours are anticipated in the afternoon, posing a risk of flash flooding in areas already saturated by recent rains.
According to the US National Weather Service in Wilmington, a flood watch is in effect for Robeson, Bladen, and Pender counties, where conditions are particularly ripe for rapid flooding. Temperatures are expected to climb to around 90 degrees, with heat indices potentially reaching 100-105 degrees, adding another layer of discomfort to the already challenging weather.
Residents in low-lying areas and regions prone to flooding are advised to stay alert and prepare for potential evacuations. The combination of excessive rainfall and high temperatures could create hazardous conditions, especially for those without access to adequate cooling or safe shelters.
The National Weather Service recommends avoiding unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and urges residents to monitor local weather updates throughout the day. The flood watch will remain in effect until conditions improve, which may not be until later in the weekend.
