Omaha, NE – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa, in effect from 1 PM to 8 PM CDT Friday due to strong winds, low humidity, and elevated fire risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, the affected areas include Otoe, Montgomery, Gage, Fremont, Johnson, Page, Nemaha, Pawnee, Richardson, Lancaster, Cass, Saline, Mills, and Jefferson Counties. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution as weather conditions could cause rapid fire spread.
Winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. Relative humidity levels may drop as low as 19 percent, creating critical fire conditions. The warning replaces the previously issued Fire Weather Watch.
Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning due to the high risk of wildfires. Any fires that develop could spread quickly and become difficult to control. Dry thunderstorms are also possible, further increasing fire concerns.
Residents should take precautionary measures, such as securing loose materials that could be carried by strong winds and staying informed through local emergency alerts. Firefighters remain on high alert throughout the region.
