Jackson, MS – A Flood Watch is in effect through 11 p.m. tonight for Forrest, Lamar, and Marion counties as Southeast Mississippi braces for potentially dangerous rainfall totals.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the region is forecast to receive widespread rainfall ranging from 1 to 3 inches. However, isolated pockets could see as much as 4 to 6 inches of rain in a short timeframe, significantly increasing the risk of flash flooding. The advisory was issued early Saturday and covers the most flood-prone parts of the region.
Residents in low-lying areas, near rivers, creeks, and poorly drained roads are urged to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates throughout the evening. Saturated grounds combined with intense downpours could lead to rapid rises in water levels, making travel hazardous in affected zones.
Officials recommend avoiding flooded roads, securing outdoor belongings, and having an emergency plan in place. Flash flooding can develop quickly, especially during the evening hours when visibility is reduced.
This weather pattern is not uncommon for Southeast Mississippi in early spring, but the combination of saturated soil and localized intense rainfall could make this event more impactful than typical seasonal showers.
