London, Ky. – A fast-moving thunderstorm is hammering parts of southeast Kentucky this afternoon with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 1:15 p.m. EDT.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the storm was located near London at 1:06 p.m., racing east at 85 mph. Laurel, southeastern Pulaski, southeastern Jackson, south-central Rockcastle, and western Clay counties are all in the storm’s path.

Damage to vehicles from hail is expected, and residents should prepare for downed trees, power lines, and roof or siding damage. Communities including Grace and Fall Rock are directly impacted, with torrential rain increasing the threat of flash flooding.

Cloud-to-ground lightning is also active with this storm. Officials urge residents to move indoors immediately and avoid travel through flooded areas. If thunder is audible, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning.

The warning remains in effect until 1:15 p.m., with additional watches or warnings possible later this afternoon as the system moves through eastern Kentucky.
