COLUMBUS, Kan. – Heavy rain is triggering dangerous flash flooding across parts of southeast Kansas this evening, prompting urgent warnings for drivers and residents. Streets in Cherokee and Crawford counties could flood quickly as thunderstorms continue to dump rain at rates up to 3 inches per hour.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, radar showed between 1 and 2.5 inches had already fallen by late Monday afternoon, with more heavy rain expected into the night. A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 10:15 p.m. for western portions of both counties, including the cities of Columbus, Girard, Scammon, and McCune.

Low-lying roads, creeks, and drainage areas are most at risk, and officials warn that even familiar routes may become impassable within minutes. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key safety message—most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

Residents should avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and monitor local alerts for updates. Flooding may persist even after rainfall ends as water drains through the area.
