Richmond, IN – An excessive heat watch has been issued for southeast Indiana and central Ohio, warning residents of dangerously high temperatures expected this week.
According to the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency, the heat watch will be in effect from Monday afternoon through Friday evening, with heat index values reaching around 100 degrees. The affected areas include portions of east central and southeast Indiana, as well as central, south central, southwest, and west central Ohio. Counties under the heat watch include Wayne, Fayette, Union, Franklin, Ripley, and Dearborn in Indiana, and a wide range of counties in Ohio such as Clinton, Ross, Hocking, Hamilton, and Scioto.
The prolonged period of extreme heat poses a significant risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for individuals engaging in outdoor activities or working in high-temperature environments. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated, such as avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat hours, drinking plenty of fluids, and seeking air-conditioned environments.
Officials recommend checking on vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and pets, to ensure their safety during the heat wave. Community cooling centers and emergency services are on alert to provide assistance as needed.
