JACKSON, Miss. – Triple-digit heat index values will grip much of the Mississippi Delta and surrounding areas today, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. The National Weather Service warns the heat index could climb to 109°F from late morning through early evening.

According to the NWS in Jackson, the advisory covers a broad swath of southeast Arkansas, northeast Louisiana, and central to northwest Mississippi, including cities such as Greenville, Greenwood, Vicksburg, Natchez, and Indianola. Peak heat is expected between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., with little relief until sunset.

Officials urge residents to limit strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and remain in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in shaded areas and monitor each other for symptoms of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Heat stroke, marked by a rapid pulse and loss of consciousness, requires immediate medical attention.

With the advisory set to expire at 7 p.m., forecasters note that similar heat may return midweek. Local agencies may extend warnings if oppressive temperatures persist.
