Juneau, AK – Snow is piling up quickly across Juneau overnight, with bursts producing up to a half inch per hour and visibility dropping to around a half mile in heavier bands.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. Tuesday, with an additional 2 to 4 inches expected on top of earlier snowfall, bringing totals to 4 to 7 inches. Training snow showers are moving through the Icy Strait corridor and into downtown Juneau, Douglas, and Thane.
The heaviest snowfall is targeting the Juneau area, where steady bands are creating snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility. Communities including Gustavus, Hoonah, and Pelican are also seeing accumulating snow, though the most intense rates are centered near the capital city.
Drivers should expect slick streets and reduced visibility, especially during heavier bursts. Officials urge slowing down, allowing extra stopping distance, and checking Alaska 511 for the latest road conditions.
Snow will begin to taper after 4 a.m., but untreated roads may remain snow-covered into the early morning hours. Additional advisories could be issued if snow bands redevelop later Tuesday.
